WELCOME TO THE ART WORK AND ARTIST STATEMENT
My name is David M Webb and I am a visual artist working primarily with oil paints. I live and work in Derby (uk). In 2009 I completed a degree in Fine Art at Derby University. I have been making art since 2004.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My paintings can be described as Semi Abstract Expressionism, but my sources are as surprising and varied as the paintings I produce. Artists that I admire include: Matisse, Pollock, The St Ives Movement and early Expressionism. When I paint there are aspects of the world which I translate through intuition, spontaneity and a need to express, in colour, that that fills me with joy and wonder. My inspiration derives from the natural world: Flowers, People (interactions), The Sun, The Movement of leaves and their changing colours throughout the seasons. For me, making art is a deeply personal process. I am compelled to paint and record my idiosyncratic view of the world. Life can be as much about the extremes of joy as it can be about the extremes of despair. In those periods of heightened joy the world can manifest into vibrancy so vivid that one begins to feel overwhelmed. One way of dealing with the phenomena that sparkles and shivers, is to create; for me, it is an instruction to create.
The paintings you will see are just a small percent of my work. In all I have created about 500 images some of which have been sold, or given away as gifts.
Thank You for looking. I can be found on Facebook at 'THE GARAGE STUDIO DERBY'. The studio is a functioning workspace which I share with Tracey Stinchcombe where art work is produced on a daily basis. My work can also be found on Saatchi online www.saatchionline.com/davidm webb.
2013 has been a busy year as far as exhibitions and sales have gone. I have been involved in three collective exhibitions and have had two solo exhibitions all of which have produced a modest income. In addition I have worked on two collaborations, a dress design with Tracey Stinchcombe and PhotoPaintings with Matt Ling (see collaborations page).
At the end of 2013 I badly broke my leg, which thwarted my painting for nearly six weeks, although it didn't stop me filling my sketch books with new ideas for art works, which include ( with Matt Ling) reclaiming unwanted furniture and painting the furniture with my designs and imagery.
